For people who constantly drop their phones, a German student may just have come up with a solution.
An ‘active dumping’ [AD] phone case has built-in censors and 8 springs that look like hooks.
The sensors are designed to automatically detect when the phone is in free fall and then deploy the springs to catch the phone when it hits the ground.
Philip Frenzel, a student from Aalen University in Germany calls his marvelous invention an ‘airbag’ for smartphones.
Frenzel won the top award from the German Society for Mechatronics for his phone case, though the design is still a prototype.
He has patented the technology, an implication that in the near future, the case would be readily available.
The case appears to work perfectly on flat surfaces but there isn’t an indication if the results will be as effective if the phone is dropped on a jagged or uneven surface.
The future hold a great deal of promise.
