First time in Ghana and West Africa: Korle Bu Teaching Hospital performs a rare surgery

Another healthcare milestone as Korle Bu Teaching Hospital performs a rare surgery for the first time in Ghana and West Africa today. On Friday, June 21, 2019, the procedure, known as Hyperthermic (or Heated) Intraoperative Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), an alternative innovative method of delivering Chemotherapy (cancer treatment) was performed. Unlike the traditional cancer treatment that was delivered through the veins, HIPEC delivers chemotherapy directly into the abdomen, making it a good option for advanced cancers that originated in or have spread to the abdominal cavity (I.e cancers that affect area of the body containing the stomach and all the intestines).
