Know Tertiary Grading Systems Freshers.

Most freshers due to the joy of gaining admission to university forgo the grading systems at which the school requires students to adhere to. Students sometimes fuss about their presence in the university forgetting about the ultimate goal to gain a degree after four years of study at the institution. Some students also turn out to led apathetic attitudes towards their books and with the mindset of picking up in their second or third year.

However, these students graduate with a third class honor or fail since they did not build their G.P.A(Grade Point Average) or C.W.A(Course Weighted Average ) in their previous academic study or had the grading systems in mind to achieve the apex honor. Today’s article will review on the grading systems of some tertiary institutions in Ghana.

  1. THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA
University of Ghana

University of Ghana Legon grading system for GPA

The Grading system in Ghana Legon University is calculated to get points that will determine each undergraduate student honors after the end of the academic program. Keep in mind that the student honors are given after the Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) is calculated. To compute the FGPA, you need level 100 that is inclusive of the University as well as the school courses required. The Grade Point Averages (GPAs) are from level 100-400 and they are weighted as 1:1:2:2. Below is the full scheme for that classification; it includes the class of degree and the range of Final Grade Point Average. First Class – the range of FGPA is 3.60 to 4.00 Second Class, Upper Division – the range of FGPA is 3.00 to 3.59 Second Class, Lower Division – the range of FGPA is 2.00 to 2.99 Third Class – the range of FGPA is 1.50 to 1.99 Pass – the range of FGPA is 1.00 to 1.49 Fail – the range of FGPA is 0.00 to 0.99.

MARKS                GRADE

70-100                  A

60-69                    B

50-59                    C

45-49                    D

40-49                    E

0-39                      F

First class a CWA of 70.00 and above

Second class lowers a CWA of 50.00 to 59.99

Pass a CWA of 40.00 to 49.99

Anything below 40.00 at the end of all your academic year means that you can’t graduate. It means you have failed that particular program.

Each semester, the number of courses that one can offer differ from at least 3 to 10 and in some much an extent 11, 12 and even 13. However, interestingly a student doing three courses per semester and the one doing eleven per the same semester should all have their credit hours total between 16 to 21 and nothing less or more.

The sum of the product of credit points for a course (the course weighting) and the grade point for the course divided by the sum of the course weightings for all courses on the semester.
In computing the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) all the courses are treated as if they were taken in one semester.

Note: Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is not the same as the average of GPAs for the various semesters
